Solar Utility Pro FAQ's


How do I turn on or off my Solar Utility Pro?

  1. To turn on the Solar Utility Pro, select and hold the SAVE and RECALL keys simultaneously.
  2. To turn off the Solar Utility Pro, select and hold the SAVE and RECALL keys simultaneously.


How do I pair the Solar Utility Pro with the Survey 200R?

Make sure there are no other units operating nearby.

  1. Turn off both the Solar Utility Pro and Survey 200R.
  2. On the Survey 200R, press and hold the ON/OFF keys, keep both keys pressed.
  3. On the Solar Utility Pro, press and hold the SAVE and RECALL keys, keep both keys pressed.

The Survey 200R will now send its “Pairing” signal. When the Solar Utility Pro detects this signal, it will remember the serial number of the Survey 200R, and will look for that particular serial number in all future communications.

When the Solar Utility Pro has successfully paired, it will beep and display connected. This should normally happen within a couple of seconds.

Note: The top line of the Solar Utility Pro display will now show the W/m2 icon.

The Survey 200R can be put in and out of transmit mode by pressing and holding the TEMPERATURE key, and then momentarily pressing the OK (Hold) key.

When in transmit mode there will be a flashing icon above the TEMPERATURE key.

Note: When in transmit mode the auto shut down feature is disabled. You must remember to turn the Survey 200R off in order to save battery power.



How do I perform a test with the Solar Utility Pro?

  1. Connect the Solar Utility Pro securely to the PV module(s) or system, using the supplied test leads.
  2. The Solar Utility Pro will automatically detect any DC voltage connected to the PV test socket inputs and display the measured voltage (Voc).
  3. If the PV voltage polarity is reversed, the polarity indicator will flash a cross next to the voltage icon.
  4. If the incoming voltage is greater than 30v then the shock hazard icon will flash.
  5. Press the TEST button and the Solar Utility Pro will automatically measure the short circuit current (Isc).

Note: If the DC voltage polarity is incorrect or the voltage is greater than 5V or less than 1500V the Test key will be disabled until the problem is corrected.



How do I store data in the Solar Utility Pro?

The Solar Utility Pro can store up to 999 complete sets of measurements.

  1. Press the SAVE button to store all measured values on the display.

If there is sufficient memory space to store a set of readings, then the STORE icon will appear, and the readings will be stored in the next available memory location.

If there is insufficient memory space then the buzzer will sound.

If there are no valid readings on the display then nothing will be stored.



How do I recall data from the Solar Utility Pro?

  1. Press the RECALL button, this displays the user memory location indicator and displays the measured values stored in that location.
  2. Note, the location number is shown on the bottom of the LCD display.
  3. After the first press of the RECALL button, the memory location can be incremented by selecting the SAVE key or decremented by selecting RECALL key.
  4. Press and hold the TRANSMIT key to download data to a PC via the USB port.


How do I download the Solar Utility Pro to the DataLogger?

  1. Connect the Solar Utility Pro to a PC using the USB cable. (This will create a COM port on the PC)
  2. Run the Seaward Solar Datalogger application on the PC. Select the correct COM port. (Use the Help menu – Trouble shooting guide, to help finding the correct COM port)
  3. Press and hold the TRANSMIT key on the Solar Utility Pro. After a few seconds the Solar Utility Pro will transfer all its stored data to the PC.

By default the Datalogger application will save the data in CSV format. This can be opened using Solar Cert or Microsoft Excel. Note that each row of data will have the readings from the Survey 200R where applicable.



How do I set the date and time on the Solar Utility Pro?

  1. Turn off the Solar Utility Pro.
  2. Press and hold the SAVE and RECALL keys and then press simultaneously the TRANSMIT key.
    The date format and time format is shown as follows:
    MM.DD = month (1-12). Day (1-31)
    YYYY = year
    HH.mm = hours (0-23).minutes (0-59)
    SS = seconds (0-59)
  3. Use the TEST key to navigate to the field that you wish to change.
  4. A flashing field shows the field that can be set.
  5. Use the SAVE key and the RECALL key, to decrease or increase the value, respectively.
  6. Note with each change, the seconds field is set to zero.
  7. Turn off the device to save the setting.

Note: If the Solar Utility Pro has established a Solarlink™ connection to the Survey 200R, the date/ time of the Solar Utility Pro will automatically be synchronized to the date/ time of the Survey 200R.

The Survey 200R real-time clock is the master and the Solar Utility Pro is the slave.



How can I extend the auto shutdown period on the Solar Utility Pro?

After 1 minute of being idle the Solar Utility Pro will turn itself off in order to conserve battery power. This auto shutdown period can be extended as follows:

  1. Turn the Solar Utility Pro unit off.
  2. Press and hold the TEST key, then press both the ON/OFF (Save and Recall) keys together. Keep holding the TEST key.
  3. The display will show “OFF” on line 1, and the turnoff time on line 2 (in minutes).
  4. Keep holding the TEST key and press the SAVE key. Each press of the SAVE key will increment the turnoff time.
  5. Increment beyond 10 to set the time back to 1 minute.


How do I clear the memory on the Solar Utility Pro?

  1. Press the RECALL and TRANSMIT keys together to clear all the user memory locations.
  2. The instrument will count from 5 to 1 before performing the deletion.

Note: once deleted (cleared) from the memory, data cannot be recovered.



Where is the serial number on my Solar Utility Pro?

Please disconnect the tester from all equipment and make sure it is turned off before proceeding.

The serial number is located in the battery compartment.

Loosen the screws to gain access to the battery compartment, remove the batteries.

The serial number should now be visible under the middle battery.
