Advanced irradiance meters in the spotlight

A special instructional film shows how a new range of multifunction irradiance meters enable installers to carry out comprehensive solar PV site surveys and installation testing quickly and easily.

Both the Solar Survey 100 and 200R instruments incorporate a precision PV cell sensor for the highly accurate irradiance measurement, displaying results in either Wm-2 or BTU/hr-ft2 and making them ideal for both solar PV and solar thermal site surveys, as well as installation and performance testing.

Uniquely, the new multi function units also incorporate a digital compass, a digital tilt meter and a dual channel precision thermometer.

These special features enable the user to quickly identify the location where maximum levels of solar power can be collected and accurately measure irradiance, roof pitch, orientation and both ambient air and PV module temperature.

Both the 100 and 200R incorporate a display hold feature to allow readings to be captured in difficult locations. The Solar Survey 200R has the added benefit of a large internal memory and USB interface for the downloading of results to a PC.

These additional features in the 200R form part of a special wireless Solarlink capability providing wireless connectivity with the Seaward Solar PV150 electrical installation tester. This enables real-time irradiance to be displayed and measured at the same time as electrical testing is being undertaken.

This means that irradiance, module and ambient temperature can be recorded in real time within the PV150 as the electrical tests are conducted.

The battery powered and rugged Solar Survey irradiance meters are indispensable tool for all those involved in solar installation work by enabling the operator to rapidly identify the optimum location for harnessing the sun’s energy.

PV power analysis with new solar clamp meter

An informative short film highlights how a highly versatile new AC/DC clamp meter can be used for effective power measurement and diagnostic testing on solar PV systems.

Available at (please insert Seaward Solar website link to film for news release version), the demo shows how the high performance Seaward Solar Power Clamp is used to measure DC and AC circuit power, in addition to true RMS voltage and current, harmonic distortion, power factor, resistance & continuity, diode check and capacitance.

The advanced new power meter has been specially designed for use by solar PV installers and technicians to measure the efficiency of PV systems, assess the performance of the inverter and carry out troubleshooting fault testing to ensure that system components are working properly.

For fast and simple power efficiency analysis, the Seaward Power Clamp simply clips over the cable to measure current from the inverter and the supplied in-line connectors can be used to measure the DC voltage whilst the PV modules are connected to the inverter, giving an accurate reading of the power whilst the system is operational.

The new Seaward Power Clamp also has full clamp on multimeter functions and is suitable for use on systems up to 600A AC or DC current and 1000V. The new unit is supplied with test leads and probes and comes in an all-inclusive test kit carrying case.

Faster solar PV system testing with the PV150

PV150 Comparison VideoSeaward Solar has produced a new video to demonstrate the fast testing effectiveness of its PV150 dedicated solar PV tester.

The special video shows how the PV150 Solar Installation Test Kit can be used for much simpler, quicker and safe testing of PV systems as part of installation, commissioning and baseline performance tests.

The special short video shows how the tester can be used to take PV system open circuit voltage, short circuit current and insulation resistance measurements in less than one minute, and contrasts its use with traditional test methods using a multi function tester and a current clamp.

With the PV150, once the test leads are connected, all three test measurements can be made automatically with the simple push of a single button.

Then, the test results can be stored in the instrument’s internal memory for downloading to PC based records using the Seaward Cert Elements program.

In this way, the combined testing, data logging and downloading facility enables PV system documentation and test certificates to be completed quickly and without error.

The PV150 can also undertake power measurement, earth (ground) continuity testing and operational current measurement for comprehensive PV system testing requirements in line with the requirements of the MSC, EN62446 and other standards.

In addition, special wireless Solarlink connectivity with the Solar Survey 200R Irradiance Meter enables the PV150 to capture and record real time irradiance, ambient and PV module temperature as testing is being undertaken.
